I've been reading Ritsumei's blog where she talks about the 100 mile diet. This is what I posted in response:

"I found the "100 mile diet" to be really interesting - and apropos as just lately I have been reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle". I'm finding it very interesting reading despite its irritating condescending holier-than-thou preachiness. The idea is an admirable one, and I think considering the Word of Wisdom, a very wise and healthy one.

D&C 89: 10-11
And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.

I'm just wondering how the heck to afford it. =D"

I've also had several other thoughts:
"Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" could have been a wonderful uplifting book, but the author was WAY too busy with her political preaching. I haven't finished the book yet, but am simply "enduring" right now. I'm hoping to mine some nuggets of gold among the sanctimoniousness. I read a review which stated that later in the book she disses Christ. Mmmm, can't *wait* for that lovely bit.

But in any case, this idea of the 100 mile diet or eating local or home grown organics has, I think, great merits. However, it's SOOOO expensive! My gosh! I tried buying organically and locally grown for about a month. With organics from Wild Oats my food bill doubled, and with locally grown produce it tripled. TRIPLED! Thus I'm back to the el cheapo basics from Kroger.

Has anyone else switched to a local organic lifestyle and managed to afford it? If so, how on earth did you do it?
